MR BEAUFORT: 5 TIPS FOR SELECTING SUNGLASSES THIS SUMMER
A small glimmer of spring sunshine breaks through the clouds and we rightfully get excited about the summer months ahead. We dream of weekend afternoons spent sat in the sunshine sinking copious amounts of Pimms and returning to work on Monday a little sun blushed. With this increased al fresco entertainment, however, comes a serious responsibility – to adorn your face with a suitably stylish pair of sunglasses (oh, and protect your eyes from the sun).
Whether it’s a pair of Persol Dark Havana frames, a la The Thomas Crown Affair, or modern framed acetate shades from Taylor-Morris, here are our top tips for nailing this summer’s shades selection.
1. TAKE YOUR FACE SHAPE INTO CONSIDERATION
Sunglasses are undoubtedly the most important accessory this season – a good pair can make or break your summer ensemble. Whilst you might come across a friend rocking a sharp pair of shades, you’ve got to appreciate that the same pair might not looks as good on you. Knowing what type of sunglasses work best on your face is key to getting it right. Here’s some simple tips on picking the right sunglasses for your face shape:
2. TRY BEFORE YOU BUY
This naturally follows on from point number one. You’re only going to find out whether your new sunglasses sit snugly on your face by trying them on. There’s nothing worse than receiving your order through the post, trying them on, and finding out that you’ve got a fine pair of Ray-Bans perched on your eyebrows. Just like any accessory, the feel and quality of materials used to construct your shades is just as important as the brand so be sure to try before you buy.
3. INVESTING WILL PAY OFF
Just like shoes, suits and ties – making a proper investment from the outset always pays dividends in the long run. Don’t be tempted by any high-street options, there are a swathe of great smaller brands out there that don’t compromise on quality and certainly don’t break the bank. If, however, you’re interested in channeling the sartorial sunglass prowess of style icon Steven McQueen then stick to the likes of Persol. This iconic brand is synonymous with a sophisticated and charming man – no pressure!
4. BE BRAVE, NOT IRONIC
Whilst the 90s paved the way for some experimental sunglass shapes – it’s important that those styles are strictly kept in storage. Avoid anything too sporty, especially anything that could plausibly be worn by a professional cricketer or cyclist. Instead, focus on frames that pay homage to throwback styles but have a modern edge. This summer, I’d recommend going for thick framed sunglasses with tinted lenses.
5. AVOID AVIATORS, YOU DIDN’T STAR IN TOP GUN
Just no. It’s not the 80s and you’re not Parsons Green’s answer to Maverick. Equally, don’t venture anywhere toward a pair of sunglasses that resemble those worn by Tony Montana in Scarface – in his own words: “every dog has his day”. Another word of warning – once you’ve selected your sunglasses you must abide by sunglasses etiquette. If you’re unsure of what that entails, follow the below:
- Never wear sunglasses indoors (this includes whilst on the tube)
- Always remove your sunglasses when engaging in conversation
- Resting your sunglasses on the back of your head is not acceptable
