We met with Izzy Letty, a potter and pottery teacher, in her South-West London studio. Read to find out more about what prompted the change of career, her favourite ceramic to craft and lessons learnt from being a potter.
Izzy wears the Cope Oxford Shirt, Ellerby Vest, Laleham Top and Britten Rugby in her Parson’s Green pottery studio Stoneware Studios.
Izzy, thank you for hosting us your pottery studio and congratulations on opening it as a teaching studio. What’s your favourite thing about teaching pottery?
I love seeing students come in and grow and develop on the wheel and take home pieces they're really proud of.
What top tip do you have for those who are looking to pick up a creative hobby?
My top tip for people looking to pick up a creative hobby would be just to do it. Sign up for that course, buy those materials. You've just got to start.
What’s your favourite piece to craft?
A big expansive bowl. I love the generous curve or the walls that you can get on them, and as a finished product, I loved that they become the centerpiece on a table.
How did you begin your pottery career?
I began my pottery career about 10 years ago when I threw my first pot. I was working in an ad agent then I started an evening class and I just totally got the bug.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Always start with a coffee, but normally out of a handmade. Then I'll come into the studio and I'll check on any student work, unloading kilns, mixing glazes, that kind of thing. But when all of that is done, I'll sit down at the window and throw pots.
What has working as a potter taught you?
Patience. It's taught me you really need to slow down when you're at the wheel. If you're trying to rush through things, the pot is likely to collapse. Or if you're trying to speed up a drying process before something goes in the kiln, it's likely to crack.
